Atlantic City New Jersey has installed several plaques throughout town commemorating its notable residents .
After being denied service at a white only establishment she rented out the whole restaurant to serve her dinner . It became integrated a short time later.
The famous Easter Parade on the Boardwalk was also a nonsegregated event. Sara Spencer Washington started the black Easter Parade on the Northside with floats and debutantes in their finery to rival that of the one across town.
The popularity of the Easter celebration was well documented.
The Madame purchased the Brigantine Hotel on Brigantine Island N.J. which she later sold to cultish religious leader Father Divine of the "international Peace Movement Mission". It is still there and is called the Legacy Vacation Resort Brigantine Beach.
Mrs. Washington also founded the Apex News Company which printed a monthly trade publication from which one could purchase supplies for the salon or the home. It not only featured hairstyles, fashion, and makeup tips but the latest in interior design as well. News of graduates and their successes were interspersed with inspirational articles , cartoons and the obligatory letter from the editor.
"The Madame" graces the cover of the November/December issue of the Apex News.
So proud that this documentary made this happen. Perhaps one of the happiest days of my life!
